Railway Modeller

Jan 01 2026
Magazine

Still Britain's most popular model railway monthly magazine with over 800 issues published since it was launched. Always at the very heart of the hobby, and justly proud of its policy to cover all the scales and gauges and topics of interest to both ready-to-run enthusiasts and kit and scratchbuilders alike.

RAILWAY MODELLER

Welcome • A dream outcome

Yarslow • Following retirement, BARRY MILTENBURG constructed his dream layout: a fictional network set on the Eastern Region of British Railways in the steam/diesel transition period.

Hunslet Engine Co. 14" 0-6-0ST • The second smallest in the family of standard gauge six-coupled saddle tanks produced by this Leeds-based builder, drawn and described by MIKE EDGE .

Shepherdswell EKR • A series of industrial locomotive acquisitions prompted IAN LAMPKIN to build this slightly fictionalised version of the East Kent Railway that served the county’s coalfield.

Honouring the memory of Thomas the Tank Engine author Reverend Wilbert Awdry • Relatives of the Rev. Wilbert Awdry, together with celebrities, dignitaries and members of the press, gathered in Stroud, Gloucestershire, recently for the unveiling of a blue plaque on the Railway Series writer’s former home. Simon Artymiuk, who grew up in the area and met the author when a child, describes the event and rekindles some personal memories.

Porth Dinllaen MPD • ROB OGDEN describes this might-have-been Welsh steam shed scene in OO, which he constructed as a competition entry with fellow Manchester Model Railway Society member CHRIS MORGAN . See it in action at the society’s Christmas Model Railway Exhibition this December.

Scottish sojourn • CHRIS FORD continues the construction of this West Highland layout project in 4mm, which makes extensive use of products from the Peco range.

Peasevern Yard • Having built several OO gauge shunting layouts set in his home city of Bristol in the 1970s, ROB OWST moved up to 7mm scale for the latest incarnation.

The finale! • The Peco RAIL200 Model Layout Competition was brought to a spectacular conclusion at the 2025 National Festival of Railway Modelling, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham on 22 & 23 November.

An O gauge canopy – in under six hours • MALCOLM BRIGGS built this structure for a proposed exhibition layout in 7mm scale.

Greenway Wagon Repair Depot • MARC MARSHALL outlines this ultra-compact N gauge cameo, which depicts the late British Rail diesel scene and is designed to sit atop a household storage unit.

Pen-y-Bwn • KEVIN SWALE ventured into Digital Command Control for the first time with this OO9 layout, inspired by the Welsh Highland Railway.

Constructing 1960s semi-detached houses in N • CALLUM WILLCOX shows how to assemble one of the latest 2mm scale laser-cut kits from Peco, based on structures that are synonymous with post-war suburban developments throughout the British Isles.
